We slept in!! We all slept until 0730 this morning and we were stoked – maybe we are over the jetlag and on to Europe time finally??
Breakfast of hot choccies and croissants was had in a little café near the hotel, then off to the train station to pick up our car – a Mercedes Benz (a stock standard door wedge in Europe) – we just managed to squeeze our luggage into the boot and headed off, as per usual in the wrong direction – Paris. After a few missed freeway exits and an extra hour of travelling and backtracking we were on the road to Germany. Nigels refried beans from the Tex Mex the night before made a few appearances as we took the Ausfahrt (German for exit off the freeway)
We stopped at roadhouses for lunch along the way – no cheese sausages in this part of the world – and made our way into Nurburg about 3pm. Everything in Nurburg is closed today so we had planned to do our touring tomorrow before heading off on the long run down to Jona in Switzerland.
Nurburg is a funny little place – dead at the moment as it’s out of season, old villages with a massive 20km race track around their ancient castle, which has brought in a lot of the automotive industry. As its off season most places are ‘dead’ but it’s very clean, neat and well organized.
We drove around and got a feel for the place today and then pulled up on the side of the road for Koji & Tommy’s first taste of snow. It was a tiny few rocks of dirty ice/snow on the edge of the road – but hey – they were stoked.
We checked into our ‘ferien park’ – holiday park for the night and were told that snow and terrible weather for driving is due for tomorrow – the day we need to do at least 6 hours driving!!! Nigel is a little worried but we will wing it and see what happens in the morning.
The chalet we have is just gorgeous. It’s 2 story, and three bedroom – the kids are stoked to have a room each for a change. It has a massive living area, full kitchen and 3 toilets….. we have an ensuite in our room – not bad for 99 Euro per night (mistake the hotel last night was 180 Euro per night).
We’re out of French speaking Europe and into the German now – we all filled up on Schnitzels and frites for dinner at the only place in town we could find that was open. The Nurburger!! We were the only people in there – but it was 5pm.
Time to chill out now in this gorgeous little chalet and get another good nights sleep. Hoping we open the windows tomorrow to a ‘little’ bit of snow but not enough to stop us being able to drive!!!
