Emirates is a beautiful airline – the plane looked brand spanking new as we boarded – I love it how you start out with the magnificent first class private suites and then it all goes downhill from there. You move down past the tragic first class flat bed seats, then on past business class followed by premium economy and then just as you think things couldn’t get any worse and the toilets come into clear view – there’s your little ole’ economy seat.
Still she was a lovely plane and each seat had all their own facilities – ICE entertainment with loads and loads of movies and shows… drink holders, comfort pack, dinner and breakfast and pillows and rugs – no paying for extra on Emirates. The kids were showered with colouring in books and pencils and another backpack full of goodies – probably because they are Skyward members now and are meant to get that little extra.
I had laid claim to Koji on the Perth to Dubai leg, but as always happens, in the chaos of boarding I ended up next to Tommy (Tommy gets bored very easily!) – 4 seats along the middle row. All went well until sleep time when I woke to find his toes within in millimetres of my face. Nigel managed to sleep most of the way. I watched two movies featuring Paris to get me in the ‘French’ mode. The worst was yet to come. Tommy got up to go to the bathroom and within minutes came back complaining of a sore belly. I searched my seat pocket quickly for a sick bag but nadda. I grabbed a screwed up piece of plastic (magazine cover) that had a slight catchment area and it was just in the nick of time…. Out it came in large quantities…. I didn’t however notice the hole in the bottom of the makeshift bag until I could feel moisture through my jeans and onto my legs. I had been spewed on. Most of my lap had splashes of a mixture of Red rooster chips, ice-cream and yoghurt from the plane. Someone finally cottoned on and got me a sick bag, which he proceed to fill. Ahhhh the aroma at 3am in the morning in a very confined space…….
I spent the rest of the flight holding a sick bag under Toms face whilst Nigel enjoyed a quiet game of ‘patience’ on the screen a few seats over!
After a 10 hour 45 minute flight, we landed at Dubai and had a walk around Emirates new airport – its quite nice but still way too many people – always crowded and queues to get anything but we managed to stretch our legs and get a bit of culture – yes we found a Burger King.
Next up it was a beautiful A380 we boarded and we were in the first batch of seats on the nose on the bottom level (all the good seats are upstairs on the A380) so we though we were pretty good getting pointy end seats, but still in economy! This was a 7 hour 30 minute flight and it was pretty uneventful – lots of really good food though – Emirates certainly look after you in that area….
We landed and after what seemed a few kilometres of walking through Heathrow made it to customs where we were fast tracked (I think the felt sorry for us with the kids) and then to luggage pick up where our cases were gliding around just as we arrived – all running perfectly! We jumped on the Underground (I think Nig was a little excited to be reliving his earlier years!) and made our way to Earls court, where we then proceed to get on the next tube going in the wrong direction. Quick change at the next stop and we were around the corner from our hotel – Thistle Kensington Gardens in Bayswater. The kids got their first taste of ice cold wind on your face – and although rugged up with ugg boots, jumpers and trackies – were still freezing!!!
We rugged the kids up with more layers and walked down to Oxford Street for hot chocolates… the Christmas lights look beautiful and it was heartbreaking walking past all the awesome shops – but today wasn’t about that. We stopped at a place called All Bar One for dinner – yep it was 3pm. What’s not to love about a place that serves ‘Hot Choctails’ and ‘Smartie shooters’ !!!
We jumped in a black cab for the trip home and we in bed by 6pm!!!
It’s now 2am and Koji, Nigel and I are all sitting up in bed playing DS games and computers.
Big day tomorrow!!!!
Ahhhh. You can’t beat the smell of vomit in a blog.
ReplyDeleteElectronics just provide everything these days.
Have fun and remember there is no such thing as cold. Minus 5 degrees Centigrade is still a level of heat..It’s just not as hot as over here. Only 29 today.
